A day of great highs today - in all senses. Friend and cameraman Neil Peggs stopped off en route for the G8 summit to join me for breakfast and then took some tracking shots which will prove that I really am doing this journey!

Shap was looming larger in my imagination than it turned out to be in reality, but I was grateful for the company of fellow cycling end-to-ender for the last section of the hill, and the Brittle Bone Society will be even more grateful for his contribution to their funds.

Am spending the night at the home of the Mayor of Carlisle (no standard poodles in sight unlike Day 7), and heading to the cinema tonight. It's dry there and being ever the optimist I'm hoping for a film about the Sahara.....

Crossing the border tomorrow - feels like a small step for mankind but a major push for a novice end-to-ender!

Shap came, was seen (through the drizzle) and was conquered - no problems!

Constant drizzle all day made me decide to stop at Carlisle as I'm well on schedule.
